Picture this. You’re being born… meeting light and life. And because all things are energy – waves and vibrations connecting and disconnecting and always in flux – there is a specific and unique symphony in that precise moment. Your moment. Instinctively you gasp in your first breath, and are forever imprinted with the spirit of that time and place. You have become. You are a manifestation of the energetic pattern you inhaled in that quickening breath. And you will resonate to and through that energetic pattern for the rest of your life.

Psychological Astrology maps the energy of your psyche based on that miraculous moment of birth.

Your astrological birth map, based on the date, time, and place of birth, opens a dynamic and transformative world of Self-knowing, Self-acceptance, and Self-mastery. Why am I the way I am? What are my gifts? What are my challenges? Through the symbols of planets, signs, houses, and aspects – the language of astrology – you become conscious of yourself in a multi-layered and profoundly rich way.

“Astrology then, is the language of the
Cosmic Mind – the macrocosm –
reflected via the Personal Mind –
the microcosm.”

Each Planet represents a distinctive piece of your psyche – the urge to love and be loved via Venus; the urge to take action on your will via Mars; the urge to learn and communicate via Mercury; the urge to feel and express emotions via the Moon; the urge to BECOME via the Sun.

horoscope-mandala-cropSigns of the Zodiac qualify those urges and are the lens through which they manifest. We all feel emotions, yet, Moon in Aries will emote differently than Moon in Taurus. The Moon in Aries is emotionally direct, willful and spontaneous; while the Moon in Taurus is practical and resists emotional change and turbulence. We all communicate, but Mercury in Sagittarius openly expresses, while Mercury in Scorpio shares only with those who are trusted.

Houses of your birth map show an area of focus in your life: the perceived Self, the life-partner, home, family, career, and finances are examples.

Aspects show relationships between planets. We clearly see for example, how your emotions (Moon), get along and communicate with your ego (Sun); or whether your relationships (Venus) are more romanticized (Neptune), or more based in reality (Saturn).

These are simplistic examples, but learning these distinctions is both helpful and validating. When you understand your personality, your motivations, and your potentials, you are much more likely to create a life story that promises success, confidence, contentment, and even happiness.

Astrology then, is the language of the Cosmic Mind – the macrocosm – reflected via the Personal Mind – the microcosm. The more you understand about yourself, the more you understand the nature of the Universe, and that in being your best Self, you are a positive co-creator of Life.

The Spring Equinox and the Resurrection of Life

spring_garden-tulips-daffodils

(I intended to post this article on March 20, 2018 – the day of the Spring Equinox. Alas, life has been intense and overwhelming – as clients in my astrological counseling practice attest to day after day. So despite the fact that the Spring Equinox is past, and we are almost to the Summer Solstice, you may still draw some inspiration from what is written below. All apologies for not getting this to you on time! ~Michelle)

The Wheel of Life continues its turning, and with this fleeting moment of equal day and night at the Spring Equinox, we are delivered into the freshness of being, the bursting forth of life, and resurrection from the darkness and cold of the Winter just past.

As the Sun continues his sacred, life-giving journey and enters the sign of Aries, he advances higher in the sky, increasing in heat and intensity. This annual enlightenment encourages the recently cold ground to warm, the plants to push their way above the newly verdant earth, to unfurl their tender, new leaves, soon to burst with flowers and seeds… everything swells with life once more. We in the Northern Hemisphere are reminded each March that the battle between darkness and light, lost each Winter and won each Summer, stands at a truce – even if only briefly. This Spring Equinox détente delivers both relief and a promise – that as the light strengthens and warmth returns to stir and embolden us, and the glistening hues and fragrances of nature enchant and astonish our senses, we know that the descent into darkness is always rewarded with the sojourn back up into the light… into life.

Yin-Yang-flora-fauna“Equinox” describes that moment of equality between the darkness on one side and the light on the other. This means that we must emerge from the darkness to go into the light – to be resurrected. This idea, this symbolism of the battle between dark and light, is the source of stories passed down since the dawn of time. We witness our connection to this eternal battle via great literature, our most popular modern books and films, and from a spiritual perspective, much religious mythology throughout the world. It is no coincidence that one of the most enduring religious stories, that of crucifixion, death, and resurrection (shared by numerous deities throughout religious history), is the one many embrace during Spring – the time of Easter (resurrection of Jesus), Ostara (return of life from death), Passover (resurrection from slavery), and Isra and Mi’raj (ascension of Muhammad). There is an inherent knowledge deep within us, that the cycle of life and the ceaseless journey of the Sun, will bring us back into life and light – eternally.

Each Spring Equinox offers its own unique energy to mark the beginning of the return of warmth, life, and light. The astrological chart of the moment the Sun moves into Aries at 12:17 PM Eastern on March 20, 2018, ushers us into and provides the “background” influences for the duration of the Season. This year our first thrust into re-burgeoning life is one of mastering the challenge between impatience and passion, with the wisdom of the natural timing of belonging, of acceptance, and of healing. Mars challenges us to push forward with our desires, while Saturn and Chiron make sure we do so with pragmatism, and the experience of the time-tested. Actually, the Serenity Prayer comes to mind with this Spring energy – renew and reinvigorate your life with the serenity to accept the things you can’t change, to have the courage to change the things you can, and to call on wisdom to know the difference.

The Winter Solstice and Loving Responsibility

A Joyous Yule to You!

As we reach the moment of this Winter Solstice, when the Sun moves into the sign of Capricorn (11:29 AM Eastern, Dec. 21, 2017), we see the trees with their stark, naked limbs as reminders that we are in a natural time of retreat from the fullness of life, and entering a time of deep reflection. At this shortest day and longest night of the year, the dark offers us solace and the space to replenish.

Since the Autumn Equinox and its moment of balance, the Sun has diminished in power and strength, moving continuously Southward in the sky, until this day, December 21, when we become lovers of the darkness, and welcome her opportunity to introspect on the year’s passing; all that we have fulfilled, and all we have yet to accomplish. The Winter Solstice is the “one step back” in the natural “two steps forward, one step back” cycle of life, bringing us the opportunity to withdraw, to rest, to restore ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I love to imagine the hibernating animals in their dens, sleeping peacefully until the first thaw. Metaphorically, this is the image we can hold in our psyches to help us find comfort and to understand this time of harsh, bleak weather in the Northern Hemisphere.

The movement of the Sun at this time each year gives us food for thought as well. The Sun actually appears to stop once it reaches its southernmost point. He pauses in place for 3 days around the Solstice – in fact, the word “solstice” means “the sun stands still.” This is the space in which we can also stop and explore our inner workings, contemplate how we will rise to the coming year, as the sun begins to rise again after the third day.

MAAS-Winter-Solstice-Return-of-the-SunWhile the Winter Solstice is physically a time of darkness, the thing we celebrate at this time of year, as we have for thousands of years, is the return of the light – the return of the Sun. Ancient humans saw the annual decline of the Sun as a time of hardship, the time when they were tested in their ability to survive until Spring. But just after the Winter Solstice, even though the weather was still bitter, the Sun began again to rise northward in the sky, gaining in strength each day. They rejoiced in this, knowing that the days of cold, darkness, and little food would pass with the rising of the light, and their survival would become easier.

This hopeful message is also our experience during this time of year. Our hearts are lighter as we give gifts to our loved ones and celebrate with family gatherings. Our homes are brighter with candles, fires lit in fireplaces and fire bowls, and twinkle lights hanging all around. We are symbolically welcoming and calling the light back, to feed, to nurture, and to heal us. We have faith our fears will subside with the coming of the Sun, and we evoke life by bringing in evergreens to inspire us in our own continuity. It is a glorious time during which we welcome the purity the light promises and brings.

The message of this particular Winter Solstice, as viewed from an astrological perspective, is one of loving responsibility. Pause for a moment and lean into that phrase, “loving responsibility.”

The horoscope for 11:29 AM Eastern on December 21, 2017 shows a strong Saturn influence, not only from the sign of Capricorn into which the Sun just entered, but Saturn himself conjoins the Sun and Venus at this moment. The influence of Saturn is one of commitment, duty, and practical management. He asks us to work hard toward our dreams, and to put strong structures in place that will stand the test of time. Venus shows us the beauty of harmony, fairness, and the blessing of our loved ones. As these two energies combine with the Sun, the message is one of holding our loved ones close, and of doing our best by them so that we strengthen our bonds, grounding them in reality. At this time, may we also use Saturn and Venus to extend loving responsibility to all our fellow humans, and indeed to all our fellow beings.

So, I invite you to light your Solstice fire and to look intently into the flames as you ponder the year just past. Allow the flames to inspire you toward a profound sense of loving responsibility as you welcome the glorious return of the Sun.

A Note:

There is another face of Saturn that I believe we often forget – the idea of rich rewards for work well done – of digging in and doing the hard work when it is required, and then reaping the rich rewards of that committed effort; of creating a solid structure from which good things can grow and thrive. As you sit before your Solstice fire introspecting about the year just past and setting your intentions for the year to come, remember this dynamic of Saturn as well, and remember to extend your loving responsibility beyond yourself and toward all within your reach. Your blessings and rewards will be great.

If we remember our mythology, it was during the reign of Saturn that humans enjoyed The Golden Age, which was then celebrated in Rome for centuries as Saturnalia at this very time of year. For a week each Winter Solstice, Rome was rich with feasting and evergreens and merrymaking to honor Saturn and that mythological Golden Age.

The Autumn Equinox and the Moment of Balance – September 22, 2017

sunset-in-autumn

Sunset in Autumn

Balance.

This is the word we reflect on at the Autumn Equinox. As we see and feel the shifting of the light and the crisping of the air, the Sun, just entering the astrological sign of Libra, continues its descent across the Southern sky, gradually weakening in light and height. This day is the day of equal day and night hours, when light and dark are not battling for the sky, but equal in strength. The equinoxes, both Spring and Autumn, are the only times when the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are equally illuminated. In the Northern Hemisphere we are now in-between the extremes of the heat of Summer with its long, languid days just past, and in anticipation of the short, dark, cold days of Winter. We are betwixt and between… a time of equilibrium, a time of balance. A time of transition. It is as though we are between a deep inhale and a powerful exhale, where the moment hangs shimmering and poignant, before it passes away.

The-Red-Vinyard-at-Arles-1888-Vincent-Van-Gogh

The Red Vinyard at Arles, Vincent Van Gogh, 1888

Before we started buying our food at grocery stores and super centers, the Autumn Equinox was a celebration of the harvest – the time when, both exhausted and jubilant, we’d successfully brought in the fruits of our labors, preparing and storing them for the winter. It was a time to mark the importance of working together for a common cause, a time to revel in our community as the stronghold of our survival together. This is an idea that is central to the energy of Libra and to this time of year: equality, balance, community, peace, beauty – the peace and beauty of the dying sun, of the vibrancy of the trees in their final blaze of glory, of our relationships and what we create when we are equal together, honoring all sides, balancing all views, and coming to diplomatic solutions that strengthen and protect us all.

Equinox is from the Latin aequinoctium, meaning “equal night.” Today the night is equal to the day, yet as we move through time away from the Equinox and toward the Winter Solstice, the days become shorter and and we have less light to live by. What was known to our ancestors, before technology gave us permanent days with electric light, is the part darkness plays in the work of spiritual transformation. The darkness, to which we are absolutely heading as each day passes, is a place that restores us, a space where we germinate, and regenerate. But before we reach the full darkness of the Winter Solstice,

Libra-Symbol-Glyph

The glyph for Libra represents both the scales and the Autumn sun setting over the horizon, a symbol for equilibrium and peace.

we have the opportunity to learn from the harmony and symmetry of the Equinox. We tap into the beauty of internal balance, that sense of equilibrium we need in order to start preparing for the darkness. In this space of anticipation, when the light is gorgeous, the air is temperate and cooling to the skin, and the riotous, rich colors of ‘Nature in her Fall’ imbue our spirits with gratitude, with generosity – and because we are feeling externally delighted – we find it easy to extend ourselves in love, open to both giving and receiving. The crispness of the season is reviving to the spirit, and for as long as we dare, before the dark and cold drive us inside, we strive toward company among others, pleasures, beauty, harmony, and love. This is the message of Libra.

The particular message of this Autumn Equinox, found in the astrological chart drawn for the moment the Sun moves into Libra at 4:03 PM Eastern on September 22, 2017, has much to do with balancing our wounds with our identities, and where we want to shine. Often the places where we feel wounded, excluded, abandoned, or victimized so interfere with our potentials that we can’t seem to get past ourselves to achieve our goals or take the next step toward healing. Sometimes we even project our talents, our greatness, onto others, not quite believing that we can ever fulfill the dreams we long for, leaving it to others to lead creative, fulfilled lives. This Autumn Equinox season brings the opportunity to pull in those projections so that you can own your own dreams and potentials. This energy also includes showing you the the ways in which to attain the tools you need to bring your gifts into reality – if you are willing to see and take the challenge and do the necessary work. So again, we are back to balance. Being out of balance is living only in a dream; or conversely being so focused on duty, responsibility and work that you don’t allow yourself to have a dream. Use this Autumn Equinox energy to open you to the balance of both creating a vision from your dream, using the tools before you, and doing the work to manifest the reality that you yearn for. (Sun in Libra opposite Chiron in Pisces, both squaring Saturn.)

The Virgo New Moon – A Calling – September 20, 2017

pottery-cracks-filled-with-gold-text

This early morning New Moon feels like a calling to me.

At 1:30 AM Eastern today, September 20, 2017, the Sun and Moon conjoined in one of the most astute signs of the Zodiac: Virgo. And, the degree of this New Moon set off the degree of the Solar Eclipse just past – so there’s an intensity, and a force behind this moment.

The combination of this intelligent Virgo New Moon with the Autumn Equinox in two days, on Friday, Sept. 22, is asking us to work on something that is bigger than we are, even if it requires personal adjustment, and long-term effort. We can begin anew for our families, communities, and our country – and the goal is to serve the greater good with our intellect, with our genius, with our actions, with the certainty that the future will be better than our now. And we can begin anew with our vulnerable, wounded hearts on our sleeves – the same sleeves that we must roll up so that we can get to work.

The business at hand in this new beginning is action in service toward healing each other.

Let me just say that again. The business at hand is action in service toward healing each other. Healing you and me. Healing them. Healing us. And that means letting others in to help you heal you – while you’re doing all you can to help heal others. Another way to put it is reciprocity in love, service, and compassion.

The tools at our disposal are both practical and spiritual in nature. Call on your ability to discern what is useful and what is pointless – what is healthy and what is sick. Call on your ability to ground and stabilize whatever is necessary to create new structures, structures that are built with compassion and acceptance for everyone. Call on pragmatism. Call on determination. Call on commitment. And do the details… while keeping a broad view.

Show your broken heart – the heart that is full for those who have lost everything, for those who now live in fear, for those who are maligned and beaten and murdered – and know that in showing the cracks, you become stronger by the loving compassion of others that fill them in. Accept the love and compassion with gratitude and give it back in full. This is the most powerful tool possible.

Will you accept the call?

The Summer Solstice and the Wisdom of Spiritual Action

Summer-Solstice-Spirtuality-2017

From our earthbound perspective, as we watch the Sun on his apparent path around us, he reaches the fullness of his heat during the Summer. Today, actually this morning at 12:25 AM Eastern, the Sun moved into the cardinal sign of Cancer, heralding the Summer Solstice, the height of his annual golden reign over the sky. In the Northern hemisphere there’s no question that we’ve left behind the experience of freshness, newness, and possibility that Spring brings, as we achieve the high point of our journey living life through the fullness of long, hot days.

The word Solstice is derived from the Latin “solstitium”, and means “the sun stands still.” So I like to think of each Solstice, both Summer and Winter, as a moment when we pause, take stock, reflecting on our connection and experience to our own “hero’s journey” which is symbolized by the Sun. In mythology the characters at the center of all hero stories are “solar characters.” In astrology, the symbol for the sun is a circle with a dot at the center, and from a personal perspective the circle represents the perfection of life around you, and the dot is you. Each of us has the Sun somewhere in our birthcharts, meaning that it is our birthright to live as a solar hero, or a golden child – at the center of the perfection of life surrounding us. The path to that experience is called the “hero’s journey” in which we live our life experiences with consciousness, moving ever closer to ourselves as the rightful center of our own lives. For some, this journey might be challenging and fraught with fear, obstacles, and challenges. For others it may be easier… but whichever is your experience, it’s a perfect day to pause and reflect on where you are in your own “hero’s journey.”

What can be helpful in that reflection is to understand the energies available to us in this particular Solstice, which I like to think of as being the “background energy” informing the entire season. This morning’s Summer Solstice astrological chart shows that taking action on our beliefs may be somewhat challenging, but also supported by the Divine – and if we take the challenge we may be rewarded with the wisdom that the task accomplished brings. (Mars in Cancer applying to the square to Jupiter in Libra. Mars in Cancer applying to the trine to Neptune in Pisces.) This energy creates the impetus we need to allow our inner Divine nature to inform and support our quest for wisdom through right, if perhaps challenging, action.

There is also emphasis on analyzing our ideas, and allowing our curiosity to push us into new ways of thinking, and communicating whatever we come up with. Through these new ways of thinking is a potential kernel for healing a wound, or wounds – perhaps wounds around playing the victim, loss, needing redemption, or feeling outside the realm of God/Spirit/Universe/Wholeness. (Mercury conjunct the Sun, both in a square to Chiron.)

With the Mars/Jupiter emphasis, there are other ways that we might see this energy manifesting: pushing beliefs on others, courage of our convictions, the conquering spirit, ambitious aims, the need to travel or “go far,” a pioneering spirit, daredevil actions, righteous vindictiveness, the “means justifies the end” mentality, gambling or taking risks toward an ideal. There are many ways to combine the energy of Mars and Jupiter, but consciously choosing to elevate your actions with optimism and grace is one of the finest, and a good choice to strive toward.

Happy Summer Solstice everyone!

MEDITATING WITH THE NEW MOON – Thursday, May 25, 2017 – 3:44 PM Eastern

NEW MOON IN GEMINI
As with every New Moon, this one marks the beginning of a fresh new cycle. Because the Moon is so close to Earth giving us a Super New Moon – even though we can’t see her when she’s new – your responses may be stronger, the pull greater. During a Super Moon, due to the closeness of Luna to the Earth, the ocean’s tides run higher, and I expect, your responses are more strongly felt as well.

Being in the sign of Gemini, this is a fertile time to engage your mind and to communicate what you think, what you learn, and what you know. Give your curiosity free reign, and allow that restless, questioning spirit to guide you to the next exciting moment, and then the next, much like a bee gathering nectar – only you’re gathering information, enjoying the experience, and banking it all mentally to use later.

If you’ve been reticent about sharing new ideas, use this New Moon to break free of whatever has held you back, and trust that this is the time to offer your ideas to others. Emotionally the energy of Gemini isn’t prone to deeply felt or “sticky” exchanges, but rather feels that the mind is the path to the heart. With that understanding, during this New Moon appeal to the minds of others, to their intellect, and watch as the seeds of knowledge and information you plant begin to take root and grow.

Sacred Energy within this Super New Moon

For those of you who watch midpoints, Neptune, the planet of Source, of connection to the Divine, is squaring the midpoint between the Sun/Moon conjunction and Mars, all in Gemini. This creates a challenge to bring spirituality and sacred flow into this new beginning, as well as mystic, visual and creative stimuli.

And for those who appreciate the inclusion of the Goddesses, later this evening the Super New Moon will connect in a lovely angle to Vesta – the Lady of Focus, the restoration of the heart, sacred sexuality, and the commitment to the Self to become whole unto the Self. During the dark of the moon this night find an opportunity to be alone to restore and rejuvenate your symbolic “virginity” or wholeness.

WORDS FOR MEDITATION
I open my mind and my words to the people around me, understanding that it is the time to engage curiosity and the intellect. I am open to expressing myself in a new and exciting way, trusting in my own intelligence. I imbue this sacred moment with the fire of my inner Divinity.

HOW TO MEDITATE WITH THE MOON

Using the simple Moon thoughts above are a wonderful way to begin a daily meditation practice that keeps you focused on, and grounded in, the emotional energy of the Cosmos each and every day.

You can do a very simple 8/4 count meditation, which means you settle into a comfortable position, close your eyes, focus on your breath, and breathe in to a slow count of 8, hold it for 4 counts, and then breathe out for a slow count of 8. Hold your breath again for 4 counts before breathing in again. On the in-breath recite a word or phrase from the Moon Meditation in your mind, focusing on that energy and holding it, and then consciously release that same energy out into the world on the out-breath. Then begin the process again on the in-breath, either using the same word/phrase you’re working with (until it feels comfortable and “right”) or move on to the next word or phrase from the Moon Meditation.

Valentine’s Day
MEDITATING WITH THE MOON – Tuesday, February 14, 2017

MOON IN LIBRA
I love that the Moon is in Libra, the sign of love and relationship, on Valentine’s Day. Not only that, but the Moon, the symbol of our emotions, our instinctive responses to life, our need to nurture and be nurtured, is connecting with both Venus, the Goddess of Love, and Mars, the God of Sex. How perfect! Throw in a connection to Mercury, and we get a day filled with the energy of expressing love and desire out loud – hopefully in a loving, balanced way. There’s also a challenge from the Moon to Juno – the Goddess of Commitment – so be sure of who, what, and why you’re committed, or not.

Let’s break it down.

Look for a balancing point between your desire nature and your need for safety and security – for love. If there’s high energy around your desires, the need to go get what you want, be sure to factor in the desires of your partner(s) (intimate, business, and otherwise). Or if you’re concerns center around what’s fair and right for everyone involved, don’t forget to factor in your own needs, your own desires. You see where I’m going. Relationship is a two-way street that demands equality and fairness for all parties, while also honoring what’s right for you and your desires – your will. Balance and compromise between Self and Other are the order of the day. One of the best ways to achieve this is to communicate. Really take a logical, clear view when listening and speaking to the Other. And fully understand your own level of commitment. With a fair and loving attitude this can be a very lovely Valentine’s Day!

WORDS FOR MEDITATION
I open my heart to the people I love with intentions of fairness and beauty. I listen to my own needs in relationship, honoring my own desires and commitments to my values. And then I compromise when necessary. I choose my battles wisely.

Full Moon Lunar Eclipse – Feb. 10, 2017

MEDITATING WITH THE MOON – Friday, February 10, 2017

FULL MOON LUNAR ECLIPSE IN LEO
Eclipses intensify the energy of the moment and open a portal to some type of emotional transformation. Today’s eclipse illuminates your need to balance standing back objectively, with fully participating and engaging; logic with instinct; the demands of the ego with the desires of the heart. This Moon enlightens you toward understanding that the way to freedom is by springing from the structures that ground and support you, while breaking free of the structures that limit and deny you. This full moon shines awareness on building a foundation of wisdom to stand upon firmly as you reach toward being uniquely who you are… it asks you to combine the conventional with the unconventional – to integrate integrity with the energy of the catalyst. How do you live both? The solution is found via your heart – through generosity of spirit and being willing to take a risk. Create from that place of the unrestrained joy of a child, and live from the certainty that comes with tapping the wisdom of the time-tested. Step back when necessary to gain an objective perspective, but remember to come back into fully engaged participation.

WORDS FOR MEDITATION
I know which of my structures are sound and true and wise, and which are based on fear and denial. I create and participate joyously and from love because I am grounded in strength and wisdom. I am liberated from old constrictions and free to live my unique purpose. I am in right timing with both my objectivity and my participation.

HOW TO MEDITATE WITH THE MOON

Using these simple Moon thoughts are a wonderful way to begin a daily meditation practice that keeps you focused on, and grounded in, the emotional energy of the Cosmos each and every day.
