Happy New Year! It’s 2014! The Hoopla is past – Now let’s get to work with resolve.

Happy New Year 2014! Welcome to the path to your future!

So much has previously been written about this New Year you probably know this by now, but just in case you missed it – this New Year’s Day coincided with a very intense New Moon in Capricorn and a dynamic Grand Cross involving the Sun, Moon, Pluto, Mercury, Mars and Uranus. This is great stuff! Not fluffy – but profound. And powerful. Yes, the New Moon is past, but the energy present at the New Year lays the foundation for the energy for the next 12 months. 

A New Moon in Capricorn happens on New Year’s Day once every 19 years, and 2014 just happens to be one of those very special years. A New Moon signifies New Beginnings – exactly the same as a New Year.

So much newness! So much potential. So much anticipation!

My best advice for this portal into 2014? Maintain the excitement if you can (there’s definitely that kind of energy to tap)… but more importantly, hunker down and get to work. Intensify your efforts. Use your mind to its deepest capacity and express your depths. Look internally to find your compass for the future and then plan your goals meticulously – but expect the unexpected. Ride that initial high energy wave with pointed self-direction and resolve – but also with an open mind and an open heart. Instead of giving your temper the lead, harness that rebellious energy to make the changes that you’ve needed to make for a long time. This is that year. It’s about harnessing the excitement and giving it a realistic platform upon which to thrive. 

This particular New Moon pulls in the energy not only of both the Sun and Moon in Capricorn (ruled by the authoritative, ambitious, pragmatic high achiever Saturn), but also that of Mercury and Pluto (also in Capricorn), Uranus (in Aries) and Mars (in Libra), and a Retrograde Jupiter (in Cancer). All Cardinal signs (in other words initiating, intrepid, get things done signs!) Via a Grand Cross (lots of game-changing tension between all those energies.) Just… wow! There is an incredible amount of dynamic tension here propelling you to think about your core desires, your deepest needs, and then to set goals based on them. All this, while you’re feeling tense pulls to push forward and do something out of the box and beyond your comfort zone – but strive to balance those needs with deliberation and practicality – and intensity of feeling. You’re meant to find your path from the inside out (Jupiter Retrograde) and find the middle ground within all of these creative and powerful drives, and actually achieve what you start. Resolve to create and to achieve your resolutions. Once again, this is that year.

Go deep, use your brain, make a plan, work hard, express yourself, keep your energy up however you can, expect to be surprised, go for it and… achieve!

For a little insight, look back to the New Year of 1995 – that’s the last time there was a New Moon on New Year’s day in Capricorn. Can you remember anything about how you created your life that year? Let those memories inform your actions this year… either on how you did it well 19 years ago, or not so much. 🙂

It’s extremely helpful to know WHERE the New Moon and this New Year’s Grand Cross involving all the planets listed above impact your birthchart. The houses that are involved tell you what areas of your life are being most heavily impacted. The aspects (geometric distance) that they make to the locations of the planets in your birthchart give us deep and meaningful information on how you can use these energies – or conversely, if you aren’t conscious – how they can use you.

A great way to learn how to bring the meanings of all the different energies that collide when several different planets align is to play with the keywords. (By the way, VENUS is also in the sign of Capricorn and Retrograde at 26°42′. She’s not technically part of the New Moon conjunction or the Grand Cross – but she’s there in the same sign, in the mix, and important to the New Year energies, especially through her wide square to the North and South Nodes of the Moon. It’s that time again – Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio, Oct. 21 – Nov. 10, 2013

Just a reminder that Mercury has been slowing down over the past few weeks and stationed (meaning he appears to have stopped) at 18 degrees of Scorpio on Friday, Oct. 18, and will turn Retrograde on Oct. 21. He will be Retrograde until Nov. 10, reaching back to 2 degrees of Scorpio. (Read the article Mercury Retrograde: The Unlikely Healing Gift here for an in-depth look at the meaning of this phenomenon in general, a bit of Mercury mythology, and how to navigate the Retrograde with better ease and understanding.)

If you’ve been feeling, like I have, that it seems Mercury Retrograde has already been happening for a while, remember that there are two shadow periods during every Retrograde phase. The pre-shadow that occurs for about 2 weeks when things feel as though they’re slowing down prior to the actual Retrograde and when, if you pay close attention, you are getting clues as to how a particular Retrograde period will impact you; and the post-shadow that occurs for about 3 weeks afterwards, when things are picking back up, but you are still integrating and seeking resolution. So really, the entire Mercury Retrograde phase takes about 8 weeks.

Mercury-Retrograde-diagram-of-movementOur typically fleet footed planet appears to slow down, stop, and then turn and trudge in the opposite direction once every 4 months. This phenomenon occurs when Mercury is at his greatest distance from the Sun (when he appears as the Evening or Morning Star), and then turns back toward the Earth, appearing to us as though he’s going backwards. It’s as though Mercury is conferring with the Sun who gives him information to bring back to Earth for the use of us mere mortals – thus Mercury’s ancient reputation as the Messenger of the Gods. 

If you know your birthchart, look to the house that contains Scorpio, and to any planets in that house to gain understanding of how this particular Retrograde period will impact you. Also look to any planets in your birthchart that fall between 2 and 18 degrees and find what sort of angle (the geometric distance between) this Mercury in Scorpio is making to them. This will give you further insights.

Folks born between 1956 and 1970 all have Neptune in Scorpio. If you were born between late 1956 and late 1966 your Neptune is somewhere between 0 and 22 degrees of Scorpio, meaning that it is in range of being impacted by this particular Mercury Retrograde. If your natal Neptune is also in aspect to (having a significant geometric distance between) any of your natal personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars), then this Mercury Retrograde period could be a significant one for you. 

Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio brings our inner attention to probing topics like sexuality, long-standing emotional issues, death and dying, our deepest psychological fears, profound shamanic healing and making the unconscious conscious. The tendency and purpose is to thin the veil between our typical movement away from these somewhat taboo areas of life and bring them into greater awareness – and ultimately greater integration. Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio can help us heal our Shadow. (What more perfect energy could be afoot for Samhain / Halloween / All Saints Day when the veil between the living and dead is reportedly thin, allowing connection between the two worlds!)

Mercury connected to Neptune (just for those late forties and fifty-somethings among us that I mentioned earlier) is a complex combination of energies. On the one hand Mercury and Neptune combined can bring up visionary experiences, loosen the imagination, prompt us to express our dreams and give voice to the images that arise from our Souls. On the other hand we can feel muddled in our thinking, express ourselves chaotically, or tune in to our fondest modes of escape – which can translate into a Mercury Retrograde double whammy. Watch for your tendencies, one way or the other, but understand that you have the choice of which way to direct yourself.

We dive into the cycles of her life at this point. Here is where we get ideas for the story and plot development. 

3) Chat. Select a birthchart for your secondary character based on what you already know. Use birthchart to discover and explore EVERYTHING about him – potentials, challenges, life purpose, way of being, way of communicating, emotional make-up, etc. This is where we get ideas for character development. 
4) Chat. Use your secondary character’s Transit Chart to discover where your character is now and moving forward into the future, what’s impacting him on multiple levels and how he  will respond. We dive into the cycles of their his at this point. Here is where we get ideas for the story and plot development. 

5) Chat. Compare your primary and secondary character’s birth and transit charts using what we call synastry. This is just like doing a relationship consultation for “real” folks. This gives you the juice that brings your characters and the way they relate and respond to each other to full, brimming life. So much great story line comes from this as well! This is the icing on the fictional cake.

1. I LOVE my work as a Counseling Astrologer… helping folks have happier, more joyful lives is my absolute passion! Watching people go from uncertainty to confidence and then on to positive change is so fulfilling.
