August 31, 2012 Full Moon in Pisces (With Chiron and Neptune) – Compassion and Healing

Full Moons bring awareness and ask that we intensify our focus in a particular direction, just as we do when we walk out under a night sky containing the glory of a huge glowing orb – we are compelled to look up and see it – to experience the mysterious beauty above us. That fully visible and perfectly lovely full moon both lights our way through the dark and casts deep shadows. The same is true in our emotional selves at this time – we are both brought to awareness of something and may also be made aware of the shadows in our psyches.

This Full Moon occurs in Pisces, with the Sun in the opposite sign of Virgo. This is the axis of service (Virgo) and of compassion (Pisces), of getting on with the work at hand (Virgo) and of daydreaming (Pisces), of the Martyr (Virgo) and the Savior (Pisces), of practicality (Virgo) and of highest ideals (Pisces). And as all oppositions do, we are called now to find the balance between these very different areas of awareness – or in today’s Full Moon due to its connection to Mars –  to find the balance in these very different calls to action.

How will you bring balance between these areas today and for the next two weeks until the New Moon?

The Moon is very closely connected to both Chiron and Neptune, as well as Mars and Pluto, Jupiter and the Nodes of the Moon (see the chart I’ve included below)…

We are compelled to look deeply into our family wounding (family of origin, immediate family, family of choice, neighborhood, city, country) and feel out the ideal, the appropriate healing road to take. This can be a time of enormous healing – but also of enormous wounding. As always the two sides of the same coin are there to be chosen from. Let your imagination and your deepest compassion inform your awareness. And then, with the practical working ethic of the Virgo Sun, and the impetus stimulated by Mars, put forth the effort required for the healing to happen. And understand that what issues from today will both pull from the past, probably as information already received and processed, and lead toward the future, changing our beliefs and philosophies, due to the Grand Square being formed with the Moon’s nodes, which represent where we come from and are comfortable and where we are stretching toward.

Our *bodies and our physical health are part of today’s energies… there may be a kind of malaise here… a feeling that something is wrong but it’s hard to say exactly what. The Virgo/Pisces axis is the one of the health of the body, prevention, and of hypochondria. Most affected by this Full Moon are those with strong placements in Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. I would say that in health concerns, hard decisions are not the way to go today. Practicing meditation or yoga, or finding peace and solace are more the tone of the day. If you’re feeling energetic (more likely for the Fixed Signs – Taurus, Leo, Scorpio & Aquarius), dispel any lingering clouds by doing something physically active – just don’t overdo. Our bodies (Virgo) are a reflection (Neptune/Pisces) of our consciousness. So whatever you’re feeling on the inside is what you will manifest through your body on the outside. This is a great thing to remember today and throughout the next two weeks (and always): love and be compassionate with yourself – your body and its health will reflect it. (*”bodies” can also be thought of as the body of the Earth.)

There’s a very Universal feeling that goes beyond the personal and familial realm that is the typical designation of the Moon. We have those connections to Chiron (conjunction), Uranus (semi-sextile), Neptune (conjunction) and Pluto (sextile) that speak of bridging the purely personal and moving into the collective. The healing energy available now can be a balm to the flood victims of Hurricane Isaac, and beyond, especially if we harness the practical work ethic of Virgo, hand-in-hand with the compassion of Pisces.

Whatever and wherever you are today, know that there is healing and compassion available to you if you need it. And for those on the other end of the spectrum, today and until the New Moon is the perfect time to reach out and help – to be of service to those in need.

New Moon in Leo Meditation – August 17, 2012

This New Moon in Leo is a time for “getting real” with your creative drive and your heart’s desires.

The New Moon occured on August 17, 2012, at 11:54 AM Eastern

I’m feeling the energy of the Leo New Moon having just finished up the free New Moon in Leo Teleclass & Meditation… just minutes ago. I’m so grateful to each and every one of you who took time out of your busy schedule to join me this evening. It was such a powerful sharing! I wish wide-open heart spaces, loving support and gratitude, practical forward movement  in your heart’s desires, and inspired creativity to every one.

Now I want to share our gorgeous meditation with all of you!

In creating this meditation I focused on the energies of the New Moon and Sun in Leo as they emphasize and engage our hearts – in love, in relationship, in creativity and self-expression. At this moment, the New Moon, intended to restore your soul, the Sun and Moon are involved in a sextile aspect to Saturn. That simply means that these bodies are 60 degrees apart in the sky. This is a connection of opportunity between your core creative being symbolized by the Sun, your emotional being symbolized by the Moon, and the impetus to bring form and structure into reality symbolized by Saturn.

This connection brings an opportunity to engage realistically with your emotions and your heart’s desires and lends practical support to expressing them. Allow this meditation to refresh, restore and regenerate your spirit as you prepare for a new creative beginning in the next few days. A new cycle of creation begins.

Below you may listen to the meditation or read it for yourself.

LISTEN TO THE MEDITATION

New Moon in Leo Meditation

This is a guided imagery meditation.

The best way to engage in this experience is to sit comfortably upright with your bare feet on the ground or the floor, with closed eyes and an open heart and an open mind.

Relax your face. Smile and release any tension there. Relax your shoulders. Gently lift them and let them fall into a comfortable place. Shake your arms and hands lightly and then allow them to become comfortable and loose, resting your hands in your lap. Breathe deeply into your torso and as you breathe out twist easily and gently from side to side, then come to center and settle into an easy position. Now gently shake your legs and move them from side to side for a couple of breaths, then bring them to stillness, releasing any tension in them… just let them relax and become heavy. Now lift your feet a little and wiggle your toes and circle your ankles and let them come to rest, planting them firmly on the floor again, knees bent and wide, easily supporting your relaxed legs. Breathe very deeply, in and out, at a natural and comfortable rate.

Even gentle breaths – getting deeper and deeper as you relax.

Breathing slowly, slowing your heart rate. In. Out. In. Out.

Now the darkness behind your eyelids is growing even darker. Darker with every breath.

Now open your mind to suggestion. Free yourself into a blissful conscious darkness.  Breathe there, relaxing in pleasure.

Now, breathing slowly and fully in and out, imagine that all the people you have ever loved, and who have loved you, are standing in a circle around you. Family, friends, teachers, mentors, co-workers, those you have met in your travels, even if only briefly. These are the people with whom you have shared loving moments in time and space, no matter how brief or how long your experience. These are the people with whom you have shared your life: those still in their earthly bodies and those who have gone on before you. Each one is smiling at you with love shining from their eyes and their hearts. Imagine you can see the love radiating toward you in golden waves of light and energy. This light emanating from them is pure, unconditional and endless love. It is the most supportive feeling you have ever experienced. Accept it. Accept the love they offer. Know with your whole being that you deserve their love and support and open yourself to feeling it completely. Immerse yourself in it.

Continue breathing and let go of your discomfort. Release any guilt. Let go of any shame. Let go of any grief. Release misunderstandings. Let go of slights and grudges. Push all of these feelings down from your heart and out of the soles of your feet into the body of Mother Earth. She will dissolve it all and transform it into love to be shared among all of you.

Open fully to accepting love. Continue to see the love, affection, tenderness, appreciation and gratitude radiating from their hearts and eyes… all for you.

Now, continuing to breathe deeply, it is your turn to radiate. Feel the love for these beautiful souls generate and then gather in your heart. Feel your appreciation for each and every one of them for the role they have played in your life and for the rightness of the lessons they’ve offered you. Feel the magnitude of completeness and grace that spreads throughout your body as you feel pure, unconditional love for every person in your circle. Push the love out toward them, shining it through your heart and your eyes, and ask each one to accept the love you offer as you accept their love for you.

You have become both a conduit and a generator of pure Universal love. You have created an unbreakable circuit of support and of giving and receiving, bestowing and accepting. And this is the space of creativity.

Imagine that your heart is a bridge between your Higher Self, which is your Consciousness, your Intuition, your Visionary, your Mind, your Communicator  – all who reside in the upper reaches of your body, with your Will, which is your Power, your Manifester, your Pleasure Principle, and your Physical Self – all who reside in the lower reaches of your body.  Your heart connects and binds all of your selves with love, with acceptance, with appreciation, with gratitude and with generosity. With your heart as the loving bridge to all parts of you, you are freed to create your reality, and to honor your life’s dreams and desires.

Keep breathing and take a few moments to see yourself as the loving creator of your dreams. Feel your passion rising. Feel your passion rising. See yourself realizing, manifesting your life’s potentials as the you who is balanced by love. Envision helpers coming to assist you in the real work and manifestation of your heart’s desires. Steep for a few moments in the you who creates your reality and manifests your dreams.

Continue to breathe in and out with the light of love. And now, see your heart not only as the bridge within you connecting all of your inner potential and talents, but also the bridge that connects you with your circle of loving and supporting people – the people of your heart. See your heart expanding to reach them as their hearts also become bridges to you. Together you are creating a wheel of loving energy that can manifest anything that comes from a place of love, acceptance, giving and receiving.

Breathing, feel the amazing power of loving energy radiating in all directions within your circle of love, and then begin to expand the waves that all of you create out into every direction. Beam the love into the whole of the world, connecting with heart bridges of possibility, potential, appreciation, generosity, acceptance, forgiveness, and creative expression with everyone who exists.

Breathe in. Breathe out.

In. Out.

Feel the vortex of creative energy that you’ve birthed within and without. Feel your dreams becoming reality via the bridges of love and support that now exist. See yourself taking loving action toward your heart’s desires, with passion and boldness, knowing that you cannot fail because your circle of people, the people of the world and the Universe supports and accepts your vision and creative genius. Know that you succeed because the world needs your creative breath, your loving heart, to live into the next paradigm.

Now – hold these feelings within your heart as you begin to bring your breath to a natural rhythm and your awareness to your physical surroundings.

Breathing, know that you take this moment of love and creation with you beyond this moment – and into all the moments of your life. You are a loved and loving creative force with the power and support to fulfill your purpose and manifest your heart’s desires. Your heart is the bridge linking the creative and the manifesting forces inside you. Your heart is the bridge connecting you to the loving support that will help you in every way to fulfilling your dreams.

When you’re ready, come to full awareness and open your eyes; eyes that are now glowing with love and creative drive, ready to plant the seeds and then to reap the harvest of your heart’s desires. Breathe. Smile…

Now slowly open your eyes, feeling refreshed and restored.

Mmmmmm. Ok. Very nice. How do you feel?

Mercury Retrograde is Over… Breathe, Smile, Move Forward & Prepare for the Future

Mercury is Direct! Time to step forward…

As of August 8, 2012 at 1:40 AM, while most of us in this part (EDT) of the world were sleeping, Mercury once again began his forward motion, freeing us to get on with it. This Mercury Retrograde was apparently a humdinger (translation: CRAZY!) I heard from so many people who were struggling with all kinds of things… and everyone had one question: When will it be over??

So now it is.

And just now, so you know what else is going on, the latter days of this Mercury Retrograde and until about Monday, August 13, Mercury is in a bit of a challenging aspect with Neptune. These two are dancing at about 150 degrees apart, a Quincunx… which means the dance is more of an attempt to keep in rhythm and off of each other’s toes. Neptune diffuses the workings of the mind, lending a day-dreamy quality and not much impetus to perform. Neptune can also lend confusion to mental processes and keep communications off the mark of reality. It can make the mind easily distracted and long for peace. So if you’re one of the folks who is still experiencing the proverbial pebble in her mental shoe, don’t fret. This too shall pass. 😉

I’d like to mention a couple of other things that go along with the happy Mercury Direct news. For the future.

1. When Mercury is Retrograde and you feel like you can’t get anything to cooperate in order to get things done… it is a message. Try to listen to it! The best possible recourse is to stop trying to get that particular thing done in that particular way and surrender to the energy. Walk away for a little while to gain perspective. That doesn’t mean to stop doing everything. It just means to stop hitting your head against the same wall when particular things obviously aren’t going to move for you. Surrender. If you’re at the airport and you’ve just heard the announcement that your flight is delayed and you’ll miss your big meeting – well, decide to enjoy the extra hours of free time you’ve been given. You can’t change the delay – but you can change your attitude around it and turn it into a blessing. Or if it’s a project related wall you’re banging your against, change your tactic – meaning, instead of trying to push something into existence, do a little more research instead. Review whatever it is and take it slowly. Relax around it and allow inspiration to come. Mercury, especially when Retrograde, likes to dip way down into the subconscious and retrieve golden nuggets buried deeply within the psyche and then bring them up to the surface to assist you. Let that process happen! The end result will be much richer for it. And you won’t have to keep re-doing things to get them right. And please, if your computer crashes and you have 24 hours before it will be repaired – go outside or meet a friend. Enjoy life without a screen to sit in front of!

2. After Mercury goes direct there is a “shadow” period during which Mercury retraces his steps over the same degrees across which he went retrograde. This is important to understand. To illustrate, this retrograde Mercury began traveling backwards when he was at 12-and-a-half degrees of Leo. Keep in mind that there are 30 degrees to every sign (and 12 signs, so that makes 360 degrees total to make the complete circle of the Zodiac, which is actually the Ecliptic, or the apparent path that the Sun and planets follow). So Mercury went backwards from 12.5 degrees back to 1.5 degrees, covering a total of 11 degrees in reverse. Now that he’s moving forward again, he must go back over those same 11 degrees, from 1.5 to 12.5 to get back to the place he started when the retrograde began. Savvy? So during the shadow period, you may revisit things that you thought you’d put into their proper place that need your attention to be finally set right. Also, during Mercury’s Shadow, move forward and start getting things done absolutely. But still, don’t force. You are meant to pay particular attention to that ground that’s already been covered and be sure that your t’s are crossed and your i’s dotted and that the fine print has been read or written properly. Use your intuition to know how far you can go how quickly. The current Mercury Shadow is in effect until August 22, 2012. And don’t let this news dampen your spirit… get out there and do!

3. Every Mercury Retrograde affects every person differently. Where and how the retrograde impacts you depends on where Mercury is transiting around your birth chart. So each person will have a different response and a different place where the energy is the strongest – and where Mercury will play the most tricks. I did actually have one client who said this Mercury Retrograde was a piece of cake! She was the only one, but there it is. 🙂

4. Don’t be afraid of Mercury Retrograde. It is a gift! When you’re afraid of something that’s coming you build anxiety around it and your anxiety focuses your response and your expectations – and hence, the outcome. Focusing on fear creates the anxiety which in turn creates the self-fulfilling prophecy that something negative will occur. Instead, as you anticipate the Retrograde, think of it as a time to restore your mind. A time to amp up your meditation practice or sit quietly in nature or to focus on appreciation of what you’re already accomplished or to curl up with a good book in the evenings researching your next big dream. Mercury Retrograde is an opportunity to step away from the fast, forward push that you’re generally engaged in. Get a calendar and learn ahead of time when the Retrograde periods are coming and plan accordingly.

And now celebrate! I hope you’re feeling refreshed and ready to skip down that new road of possibilities!

And with the New Moon in Leo coming up one week from today on Friday, August 17, I hope you’ll join me for the Free New Moon TeleClass & Meditation where we’ll be covering how to get real with your creativity and doing a beautiful guided imagery meditation all about Leo energy! And please remember that if you join this free call you’ll get Great Gratitude Offer which is 20% off when you schedule a consultation with me before the next Full Moon. So happy Mercury Direct and I hope to “hear” you on the call!

Full Moon in Aquarius on August 1, 2012 – Be Unique and Expansive!

The gorgeous Full Moon! Be unique and allow your originality to shine during the next 2 weeks!

Tonight’s Full Moon is looming and the energy is UP! Nervy, initiating, expansive, original, rebellious, optimistic, and dare I say – possibly a bit combative?

The Full Moon occurs in Aquarius at 11:27 PM Eastern Time on this first day of August 2012. A Full Moon in Aquarius means that the Sun is in Leo and these two luminaries are playing in the sky exactly opposite to each other. We can look at that in a couple of ways – either we see it as Ego vs. Emotions; or we see it as an opportunity to balance the desires of the Ego with the pull of our Emotions. The latter is win-win if we can manage it. The former is a battle.

As is true for all Full Moons, this is a period of culmination – of flowering and illumination. Did you begin anything, plant any sort of seed, near the Cancer New Moon on July 19, 2012? Today marks halfway through that cycle, so consciously take note of your circumstances now to establish how to proceed. Alternatively, this could be a culmination point of something you began around the time the Moon was last New in Aquarius, just over 6 months ago on Jan. 23, 2012.  Perhaps it’s time to take stock of how those New Year’s resolutions are panning out? (Remember those?) That cycle resolves just before Feb. 10, 2013, so again, this is a great mid-point to see what’s being shown in the light either to let go of, proceed with, or change.

With the energies that are present right now (huge influences from Uranus and Jupiter on just about everything) I’m thinking CHANGE and expanding your awareness to include the new and exciting is what to be open to (note I did not say “act on.”) Here’s a potential mantra that is quite apropos: “I must risk disapproval from others and be true to my own unorthodox ideas in order to develop the deeper and more satisfying feeling of self-approval and to broaden my worldview and the way I live within it.”  Risk. That is classic Uranus/Jupiter ideology right there. Everyone who can get down with that say “AMEN!” If you have planets in Aquarius or Leo, or both, think deeply about this mantra. Let it go to work inside you. Again, I said “think.” I didn’t say do.

Mercury is still Retrograde until August 8, so taking direct action on new, fresh and exciting ideas isn’t advised, though you must CERTAINLY be having them. Researching those ideas, collecting them, ruminating on the best possible new directions – that’s all good! This is a very mental Full Moon with a great emphasis on the Air signs which stimulates the mental processes. And admittedly there is emphasis on Fire as well and Fire wants to move… but Uranus IS Retrograde in Aries with Mars in close proximity to Saturn. That’s to say that some restraint is called for – some grounding due to make the most of this part of the Moon’s cycle. I get the sensation of chomping at the bit, or being ushered into the starting gait waiting for the shot to sound. A little more waiting is in order and this can make the most patient of us edgy and uncomfortable.

Possibly the best parts of this Full Moon are the Jupiter connections. Jupiter is in happy conversation with the Moon, the  Sun,  and Mars lending, on the up-side, a level of generosity of spirit, nobility, optimism and self-assurance. True feel-good stuff. There is wisdom to be gained and our ethics are stretched wide to push our boundaries farther abroad. But we must also take a look at the down-side potentials as well: overextending, promising what can’t be delivered, soap-boxing and self-righteousness. So be aware of these tendencies in yourself and if they emerge, look realistically at what you can accomplish, council yourself wisely and open to other opinions around you that may be just as valid as your own.

The bottom line here is to allow your high energy to come out to play, but try to stay grounded and don’t embark on new ideas just yet – and keep your temper in check. Enjoy the positivity that’s in the air and be social! And please, come out with your unique-ness, your originality. There are opportunities to be had through them! I’ll restate that in case you slipped right past it – there are opportunities to be had by being your original and unique self! Just remember that today is NOT the day (nor are the next two weeks) to let others tell you how to be –  just as it IS the time to allow others to be who they uniquely are and to be accepting of them. In this way, by wearing our own uniqueness proudly while allowing others the same due, we can best use this Full Moon’s energy.

(Didn’t say this above, but communications with folks might not go as expected. A bit blurry, and can be irritating – Mercury quincunx Neptune. And if you can do romance – Venus trine Neptune – without too much talking, all the better.)

I’ve Been Selected for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award!

My First Blogging Award! The Very Inspiring Blogger Award…

I’m delighted to share that I’ve been given a wonderful nod by my one of my fellow bloggers – and how cool is that? And how surprising?

One of the things about publishing your own written work is that you never know, once you press that “publish” button, how what you’ve written will be received. This comes as such a happy confirmation that I must be doing something right, and that someone out there in the land of the internet is being inspired!  I’m so honored and grateful!

Thank you anonymous super nice, smart, literary guy from The Living Notebook blog for nominating me for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award

I’m so happy you thought of me!

The Process

When you’re selected for this award there are a couple of reciprocal rules to follow to continue to spread the love. A bit of paying-it-forward so to speak (except there’s no real anonymity involved) , and I LOVE stuff like that!

1. Link back to the person who nominated you:
Thank you again, The Living Notebook!

2. Post the award image to your page: (Lovely Victorian image above!)

3. Tell 7 facts about yourself:

1. I LOVE my work as a Counseling Astrologer… helping folks have happier, more joyful lives is my absolute passion! Watching people go from uncertainty to confidence and then on to positive change is so fulfilling.

2. I’m the daughter of an Appalachian farm girl and a United Methodist Minister, and the mother of a fabulous 15-year-old-son, Ian, who is an actor.

3. I’m a vegetarian and a darn good cook!

4. Besides being a Counseling Astrologer I’m a big animal activist and belong to several different Animal Activist groups. I used to have 2 dogs and 10 cats at one time. Did they call me the “crazy cat lady?” Yes. They also called me the “pied piper” since all 10 cats would follow along every day when I walked the dogs. Too cute! And I used to do greyhound rescue work.

5. I LOVE to travel and used to live in the UK and in Germany.

6. My biggest as yet unfulfilled dream is to be a published novelist.

7. I once worked as an herbalist’s assistant and loved being so connected to Mother Earth and her healing gifts.

4. Nominate 7 other bloggers and let them know they’ve been nominated:

I’ve listed my 7 blog winners in no particular order – so the ones closer to the bottom of the list are just as wonderful as the ones at the top. Please explore them all with equal fervor and delight!

1. Auntie Moon with CJ Wright – Wonderfully insightful astrology, tarot and even cooking with astrology! Yum.

2. Love & A Six-Foot Leash– One family’s quest to open minds, win hearts, and save lives through dog fostering. This is a pit-bull friendly blog!

6. Kristin Wartman – Kristin is a food writer living in Brooklyn. She focuses on the intersections of food, health, politics, and culture. And let me tell you she doesn’t mind pushing the envelope to get us to open our minds to the truth about what we eat.

7. Richard Reeve – Dreaming Awake – This is a beautifully artistic and Neptunian-like blog. A window into the dreamy and nebulous reality of what it is to be human from a Jungian perspective. Richard Reeve  is a candidate at the C. G. Jung Institute of New York where he is training to be Jungian Analyst. This blog is a stunner and makes you think!

Once again, I’m so honored and delighted to receive this Very Inspiring Blogger Award! I hope all of you reading and the 7 I’ve nominated will be just as happy as I am!

New Moon in Cancer Meditation

The Dark of the Moon in Cancer – July 19, 2012
On the day of new moon, the moon rises when the sun rises. It sets when the sun sets. It crosses the sky with the sun during the day… and she is not visible to us at all. This is the time to turn inward, regenerate and restore in preparation for a new beginning…

This New Moon is proving to be such a powerful event for me! This evening I hosted a New Moon Tele-Class and Meditation, and was just elated with all the folks who joined the call and shared this special time. Thanks to all of you!

Now I want to share our meditation with everyone. Enjoy it for the next 2 days when we’re in the Dark of the Moon phase, and into the next two weeks before the Full Moon on August 1.

In creating this meditation I focused specifically on the energies of the New Moon and Sun in Cancer in a square aspect (a 90 degree angle) to Saturn. It is meant to get you to that space of the Dark of the Moon – to experience the healing energy of darkness – the fertile dark womb of creation – and to become refreshed, restored and to regenerate your spirit in that space so that you are ready for a new beginning at the Crescent Moon.

New Moon in Cancer Meditation – July 19, 2012

This is a guided imagery meditation. I’m using Earth imagery and Water imagery since the New Moon chart shows the Sun and Moon in the Water sign of Cancer, and they are both strongly connected to the planet Saturn – the Earthiest of planetary energies.

The best way to experience this meditation is sitting comfortably upright with your bare feet on the ground or the floor, with closed eyes and an open heart and mind.

Now gently shake your legs and move them from side to side for a couple of breaths, then bring them to stillness, releasing any tension in them… just let them relax and become heavy, allowing your feet on the floor to support them gently.

Now empty your mind. Free yourself into a blissful conscious darkness.  Breathe there, relaxing in pleasure.

Now breathe your breath into your heart imagining warm, gentle dark hands lovingly holding and supporting your heart-space. Breathe gently and feel the love that is offered.

Breathe into your breasts. Let them become full with your breath and the loving presence of the Great Mother who offers perfect nourishment and comfort, a solace from the world of light.

Breathe into your stomach. Allow it to expand with the nourishment that is offered from the Mother and know that it will digest everything you need to assimilate and move forward perfectly.

Breathe into your womb. Feel it awaken and quicken with your divinely inspired creativity and intuition.

Now, imagine that you you’re lying down in a dark, wild wooded place. Smell the damp earth. Hear the sounds of the night creatures. Listen to the music of the dark flowing stream that runs nearby. Know instinctively that you are home here – completely protected and safe. Breathe in the sensation of safeness, even in the velvet darkness of the moonless night.  No sight is needed. Everything is understood through your feelings and intuition. Lie here in perfect safety and comfort, connecting your breathe to the pulse of the earth, understanding that the Earth is your mother and safe haven.  Breathe deeply and gently.  In. Out. In. Out.

Now ever so slowly and gently imagine that you sit up, legs crossed in meditation pose, continuing to breathe deeply, eyes staying closed, feeling safe within the dark womb of the woods, and settle your 1st Chakra, the area of the tail bone, onto the warm ground. Feel it connect with the Earth. Feel yourself becoming one with the Earth. Settle deeply upon it. You are connecting with the ancient feminine, understanding that you are part of that powerful source and as such, also ancient and indestructible. Your first Chakra is soaking in the infinite support and love that the Mother offers, healing and replenishing.

Now that you are grounded in pure Mother Love, slowly rise and walk to the edge of the dark night stream. Move confidently and with grace and power through the black, feral night. Squat down beside the clear flowing stream, placing your hands in the warm, pulsing waters. Bring the water to your face and as you become accustomed to the feeling, lie down with your whole body in the water and feel it flow and contour around you. The water of the Mother, the water of life is cleansing your body and soul and opening you to feeling wholeness as a woman, a mother, a protector, a nourisher, of yourself and of those you love. Feel the sensation of the liquid warmth and revel in it with joy, understanding that pleasure, feeling, and sensation are your right. Breathe deeply and gently as the water flows over and around you, bringing you peace in the darkness.

Breathe. In. Out.

Breathe. In. Out.

Now, feeling restored and regenerated, imagine that you slowly rise and lift your arms to the night sky. As you do your body is dried and warmed by a comforting breeze. Walk with a lifted spirit onto the shore and become aware again of the soft dark earth at your feet. The rustlings of dark nature all around you. You sense that the dark moon is passing and that a tiny sliver of light will be visible when you walk from the forest into and open field.  You are refreshed and your light consciousness begins to flow as you get your first glimpse of the lovely crescent of the New Moon.

You have been nourished, regenerated, made whole in the Dark of the Moon and now it is time to release newly formed ideas into your Creative Spirit and out into the world. Just as the Moon begins to show herself anew, so can you, with confidence and surety. You are supported and loved. Your creativity is poised to spring forward.

When you’re ready, begin to bring your breathing back to a normal pace. Still sitting, still with eyes closed. Still relaxed – but with stirring thoughts and an emerging idea. Breathe. Smile.

Now slowly open your eyes, feeling refreshed and restored.

Every now and then go away, have a little rest and relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer; since to remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power of judgment…Go some distance away because the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and a lack of harmony or proportion is more readily seen.
~Leonardo Da Vinci

Hermes by Praxiteles - 1898Astrologically speaking, there is a particular cycle, which while not always comfortable, has the result of great benefit:  the apparent backwards motion of a very mischievous planet. Many of us wouldn’t normally consider a period of Mercury Retrograde a blessing, yet in nature, there is rule:  two steps forward, one step back.  Without this rule, we’d all experience burn-out, fatigue, frustration and end up relinquishing our health. We must have a period of rest and reflection to maintain balance, and that is precisely what is offered during any Mercury Retrograde cycle.

Traditionally, the 3 week period of Mercury Retrograde (which is the appearance from Earth that Mercury is traveling backwards) that occurs approximately once every four months is that awful time when our cars breakdown, our computers crash, we miss our flight by seconds, our presentations flop, we’re accident prone, we can’t write or think clearly, and when we open our mouths to speak we say the wrong thing or nobody is listening. We are not meant to make any major purchases like houses, cars, boats, insurance, etc., and we are never ever to enter into any contract, (including marriage and mortgage refinances) during this time. People await Mercury’s back peddling atremble with trepidation and fear. From here, it doesn’t sound like much to be grateful for…

Certainly the above is a blatant exaggeration. I pity the poor Soul who could actually have all of these communication and transportation problems during one three week period of time. Yet, this cyclical period didn’t get its bad reputation without reason.  So what is it then, really? Why does Mercury Retrograde affect communication and transportation? Why do we lose our minds temporarily? Let’s look briefly at the mythological Mercury so that we can begin to make sense of, and feel gratitude for, this recurring phenomenon.

Mercury the Trickster – God of Communication, Technology & Transportation

Mythologically, Mercury (Hermes in Greek) represents several archetypes:  the Trickster; the Messenger; the Guide and Companion; the Psychopompos (the deliverer of the newly dead to Hades); the Puer Eternis (the forever young and charming fool); the Thief; the Teacher; and the Magician, to name more than a few. You may well ask how one God can wear so many different hats? The answer is that of all the Gods, Mercury alone has the power to mimic and portray the attributes of all the other Gods. His cleverness allows him to be a virtual chameleon, and because of this virtue he was favored by his father, Jupiter (Zeus), and was constantly sent on missions to rescue other Divine children, or to lead inept mortals currently in favor out of trouble.

Mercury is witty, confident, competent, and utterly without conscience. He is constantly on the move, gathering information, analyzing it and either acting upon it, or stowing it away to be dealt with later. He is pure mental process, the governor of the Mind. He is easily bored and often up to mischief. Because he achieved such elevated status as messenger of the Gods, he became the patron of all communication.  Because he is so clever and forward thinking his influence is over all devices of communication, even as they are being invented. Because he journeyed via many modes between Olympus and Earth, and to and from Hades so often, and because he led so many, mortal and immortal alike, on their journeys (whether on an adventure, out of a misadventure, or to lead the spirits of the dead to the underworld forever), Mercury has become the patron of travel and all modes of transportation. Hence the breakdown in communication, transportation, and travel when Mercury decides to move backwards, rather than forward!

I believe it highly unlikely that the Universe has come up with a 3-week period of time 3 times a year simply to annoy and frustrate us in our attempts to get smoothly through our lives. Undoubtedly there is a deeper meaning underlying the mishaps and miscommunications that occur during Mercury’s retrogression. Consider this. The natural order of things produces periods of wakefulness and attention, and in balance, periods of rest and simple awareness. The pattern of waking and sleeping created by the rising and setting of the Sun is the most obvious example that comes to mind. The turning of the Seasons also mirrors the need for active attention (Fall) followed by a period of restful awareness and recharging through being still and tuning inward (Winter). So it is with Mercury who represents the energy and archetype that resonates with our inherent need and desire to communicate our thoughts, ideas, and artistry out into the world around us. The period of Mercury Retrograde, then, is an opportunity for restful awareness provided by Universal Law. It’s a time to turn away from full-tilt active attention to our forward driving lives. It’s the time to rest and refresh the Spirit; to re-evaluate where we are, what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how we’re doing life. All of the planets, not only Mercury, have their own periods of retrogression. Mercury, because it is closest to the Sun and has the smallest orbit, simply retrogresses more frequently than the other planets, hence the greater common knowledge of this particular planet’s patterns and its apparent “effects” upon us.

Subconscious MindNow knowing what we know about Mercury, his mythology, and the natural need for times of rest and inner rediscovery, the question becomes “How do we best utilize this time to our greatest benefit, and to the purpose for which it exists?”  The beginning of the answer to this question comes in the form of understanding that during our typical forward motion, we don’t process much of the information waiting in our unconscious minds. Information is there steeping, awaiting a moment to enter the consciousness in order to provide the thrust toward transformation that is appropriate for the time. Mercury Retrograde periods are when we should take the opportunity to rest and restore ourselves through self-evaluation. During this rest, Mercury will surprise us by dipping down into our unconsciousness returning upward with the most timely and incredible material. We receive a gift that we would have otherwise missed without this period of re-connecting with our internal selves. If we use this time wisely, we will consciously process this gift, alchemically transforming our current paradigm for the new and more relevant one. This process is extraordinarily healing, especially if in the months prior to the current retrogression, we have been experiencing a time of personal transition.

Another incredible gift of the Mercury Retrograde period is that we can place our current projects on hold, or put them on the back burner, so that they can in their turn steep and develop into what is needed toward our best interests. We may feel, however, that we cannot let go of, re-direct, or re-schedule a project or other imminent event. There are deadlines and responsibilities, and we can’t possibly base our modern lives on some ancient form of calendaring like Astrology! However, if we do not, if we resist the natural cycle of moving from forward attention to simple resting awareness, of the two-steps-forward and one-step back nature of all things, THEN we pay the price by experiencing many of the things listed at the beginning of this article. Erin Sullivan, who wrote the preeminent volume on retrogression available today, titled Retrograde Planets, states “The essence of Mercury Retrograde cannot be controlled by the will and when we think we are smugly in control we are most likely to experience the Trickster in all his magnificent glory.” When we can accept this retrogression as the teaching and healing device that it is intended to be we can stop anticipating it with dread and anxiety.  We can, instead, receive the gift graciously, recharge and realign ourselves with our true nature and purpose, and then pause to give thanks for the opportunity to do so!

Astrology Symbols - MercuryWe have, as many consciously understand, through socialization and the raising of technology to such godlike degrees (while leaving the beauty, wisdom, and lucidity of Nature behind) almost entirely removed the numinous and sacred out of our experience of life. We are in the throes of healing an incredible separation from the Divine in our culture. In moving more toward the natural timing of cycles and events in our lives, with respect to informing and reflecting the macrocosm that is symbolized by Astrology, we can begin to reclaim our natural state of being and evolving. We can drive forward with our mission and our intention, and then take a moment to reevaluate and redeem ourselves during the process of achieving. Give thanks then that your computer crashes, or your brakes need replacing! It means you might need to take a break, reflect, restore and enjoy this small moment to replenish your Spirit. This is the hope of Astrology, and the lesson, and true gift, of Mercury Retrograde.
